When the doctor first told me about my foot fracture I was more concerned about 'when can I surf again?'. I wasn't thinking about living with crutches.
I've never had to use crutches other than playing with someone else's crutches. If you've had to use crutches, you know. If you've never had to use crutches, let me tell you, it's a trip. EVERYTHING becomes harder. I have to plan things out more.
When going from my chair to the kitchen, gotta think, what can I take to the kitchen so I don't have to make another trip. Unfortunately, it's hard to carry stuff with crutches, so I stuff things in my pocket. OK, put ice pack in my pocket(to return to freezer), while carrying bowl to wash. Get to kitchen, wash bowl and fork, get back to my chair, feel in my pocket, realize I forgot to return ice pack to freezer. Get up again, walk to freezer then come back.
I get up from the dining table chair to go to the kitchen then sit on the couch. On the couch I check my pocket for my phone, ahhh I left it on the table! Gotta get up again, get my phone then go back to the couch.
I'm learning...
Stairs are NOT my friend
I can't use crutches while carrying my coffee cup
Plan my trips(just in the house)
Use a fanny pack or back pack to carry stuff(outside the house)
Today is only day 3 and it feels like 3 weeks!
Huge MAHALO to all who wished me well and praying for that speedy recovery!!!!!
Don't worry, I know I'll get better at life on crutches and am getting encouragement and advice from reading/watching others experiences online.
Dean, just FYI in case you're thinking about it . . . my friend used a knee scooter to get around when she broke her foot, but it ended up messing up her knee so bad that she needed surgery to fix it. Get a bell to ring for help instead. LOL.

Hi Jalna,
Funny you mentioned that.
I just got a scooter from my friend. She loved it.
Feels a little shaky, not sure I'll use it.
I certainly don't need to hurt another body part.
Thanks - Take care!!!

here's a story for you...friend fell into a hole in the road in Japan and broke her foot too. I'll skip the details of how not speaking Japanese and trying to get to a medical facility sucks but the hospital ended up loaning her crutches for the rest of our trip.(She wanted to stay and not go home). But, not knowing how to use crutches, googled it and practiced all night long so she could get around.
BIG MISTAKE! Her arms were so charlie horsed from practicing that she couldn't use the crutches at all the next day.
Ended up having to buy a wheel chair to get around and get home.
